IPN and UPN Sections

Classic I-shaped IPN and U-shaped UPN sections — versatile members for construction and machinery manufacturing.

IPN and UPN are classic structural sections produced to European standards, with tapered inner flange surfaces. IPN, with its I-shaped cross section, excels in beam applications, while UPN, with its U (channel) section, stands out in frames, chassis and side-wall applications. Both sections are fundamental building blocks of the manufacturing industry thanks to their weldability and wide availability. At Atakaş Demir Çelik we supply IPN sections from 80 to 400 and UPN sections from 65 to 400 in S235JR and S275JR grades from stock, with cutting to project requirements.

The tapered inner flange face of IPN and UPN is what makes these sections indispensable in classical fabrication, but it requires tapered washers in bolted connections. The UPN section is sensitive to torsion because its shear centre lies outside the web: for long-span beams, a double-channel solution (boxed back to back) should be preferred. In trailer chassis and tipper fabrication, the flat back face of UPN eases welding and assembly. We offer both series from stock with short lead times, in 6 or 12 metre lengths as requested and together with the project cutting list.

Because these two series cover a wide range of sizes, confirming stock before quotation clarifies the lead time. For sections not held in stock we present the procurement time and alternative section options within the same quotation. In fabrication dominated by welded connections, the squareness of cut faces directly affects labour, so we prefer saw cutting.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between IPN and IPE?
The inner flange face of IPN is tapered while IPE is parallel. At the same depth, IPE is lighter and usually more economical; IPN is preferred for classical details and renovation work.
Where is UPN used?
It is common in chassis, frames, mezzanine beams, formwork and scaffolding systems, and machine bodies. Its flat back face simplifies welded connections.
Where can I find the weight per metre of these sections?
The section table on our weight calculator page lists kg/m values for IPN and UPN; enter length and quantity to compute total weight.
